Blue Energy believe communities that host our renewable energy developments should share in the benefits. Our strategy is to allocate a share of revenues to community benefit initiatives. Community engagement is actively encouraged to ensure local funds are allocated by local people. Many of our Projects have pioneered innovative benefit schemes and we are always looking to offer the most tangible and worthwhile benefit packages.
The Beinneun Wind Farm Project has set a benchmark for positive community engagement. The Beinneun Wind Farm Co-Operative was the first of its kind for a commercial wind farm developer in the UK. The scheme allowed investment in the Project during the planning stage. Once the Project was consented and a grid connection secured, the investors received bonus shares equal to 50% of their original investment. These could then be held for the lifetime of the wind farm, where they would receive an investment return, or be sold at an enhanced value.
Once the wind farm is operational it will also provide a financial contribution to the electricity bills of a large number of houses in the locality of the wind farm, providing electricity vouchers to the nearest community. We have also offered yearly scholarships in addition to annual funds paid to education establishments.
Scholarships were awarded to students living near the Middlewick Wind Farm prior to construction commencing and we have committed £500 per MW (over £10,000) annually of scholarships for the lifetime of the wind farm.
The Marston Vale solar project is providing the Marston Vale Trust with around 40,000 kWh (approx) of free electricity every year and the Marston Vale Wind Turbine has now added in excess of a further 130,000 kWh of renewable electricity every year, enough to fully offset the total annual energy consumption of the Marston Vale Visitors Centre.
Wind Industry Benefits
The growth of the renewables industry in the UK has lead to significant job creation in the development and construction sectors. Wherever possible, Blue Energy looks to utilise local expertise and procurement to ensure our Projects lead to significant investment in the local and regional economies.
